This post has nothing–well, almost nothing–to do with debt. But this is a blog, right? So I can post whatever I want.
And what I want is for you to see a new play called Hell’s Belles–or at least spread the word about it. It’s a comedy with the underlying theme of “Be careful what you wish for”: two divorcees fantasising about the ideal man accidentally conjure up a demon, who can only leave once he has someone’s signature on a contract that offers a wish in return for a soul.
I’ll avoid a Wolfowitz moment here by acknowledging that the playwright is a very good friend of mine, Deb Mulhall. But in the John Cootes tradition, I wouldn’t recommend her play unless I thought it was great. And I did: the plot might seem to have echoes of The Witches of Eastwick, but there’s not a derivative moment in it, and there are many many good lines and coherent twists to the story.
The main problem with it is the location: it’s being performed at the Wollongong Workshop Theatre in Gwynneville (192 Gipps Rd; Ph 4225 9407), for this and the next two weekends only. This is over an hour’s drive from Sydney.
But you don’t often get to see a truly funny, brand new play, and it’s performed by a very good little company. It’s more than worth the drive.
And remember, if you enjoy it–you owe me.
